What is Rolfing® Structural Integration?
Rolfing®, as the process is commonly called, is a method of muscle and joint manipulation and movement education. The goal of the method is to encourage an aligned and balanced posture. It also aims to open and lengthen the body in order to bring ease to the everyday activities of walking, sitting and standing. To accomplish these goals the Rolfer™ uses a variety of bodywork techniques and movement cues to bring the major body segments–the feet, legs, pelvis, torso, shoulders and head– into a relationship with the one another and the entire structure into conformity with the demands of gravity. The techniques, unique to Rolfing®, are not the only factor that makes the process so effective. A large part of the a Rolfer’s™ training consists of analyzing posture, gait, and basic movements in order to more precisely work with the individual needs of each client.
We want to get a man out of the place where gravity is the enemy. We want to get him into the place where gravity reinforces him and is friend, a nourishing force….This is the gospel of Rolfing®: when the body get working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.
